About Tufenkian
Tufenkian was started in 1986 by James Tufenkian, who became enchanted with the craftsmanship of the Tibetan carpet weavers during his travels through Nepal.
A core goal of Tufenkian has been to give back to the community. Among the steps the company has taken to improve the lives of over 4,000 workers and their communities, Tufenkian has provided food, comfortable housing, a medical facility, a Montessori school, Nepal's first water purification and waste treatment facility. From the very beginning, James Tufenkian and his partners in Nepal have ensured that no one under the age of 18 produces any products bearing the Tufenkian name.

Weaving and Materials
The art of making carpets by hand using the finest materials is cherished and nurtured by Tufenkian. Each carpet is carefully crafted, the methods virtually unchanged for centuries, using traditional techniques in the service of contemporary design.
Tufenkian carpets are knotted with wool from Tibetan highland sheep, which is very strong and rich in lanolin. Its quality is silky yet resilient, the lanolin providing natural protection against soiling and wear.
The wool is hand-carded and hand-spun, processes which respect its natural integrity and variations. The wool is then dyed in small lots using Swiss metal-complex dyes, to ensure colour consistency and light-fastness.

Tufenkian produces a wide variety of styles, ranging from modern, to Arts & Crafts, to traditional. Tufenkian's strength has been to work with leading designers such as Barbara Barry, Kevin Walz, and Clodagh, each of which have designed spectacular carpets for Tufenkian as part of the Designers' Reserve Collection.
Tufenkian also supports a strong custom-program. Whether it is the resizing or changing of colours in existing designs, or creating a brand new design, Tufenkian is able to custom-create carpets of any size.
