Shipment of a new modern line Milano arriving shortly.

We have just added a new line of modern rugs to our collection. These are made in Pakistan with nice workmanship and colour combinations. The designs are quite linear and simplistic and would work well with many different styles of decor.

Some contain an earthy tonality that would work well with a West Coast Arts and Crafts approach with some of the wilder colours and patterns better suited to more contemporary environments.

Sizes are 6 x 9 to 8 x 10, good standard living or dining room dimensions. I will follow up with more info.

Our new Tribal shipment is in!

2913 Gabbeh 3' x 6'2913 Gabbeh 3' x 6'Our late-June shipment has arrived and has been unpacked and photographed.

The shipment contains predominantly tribal pieces from Iran, with highlights including:

  • a good selection of Yalameh, including some narrow runners and two 7' x 10' area carpets.
  • a wonderful multicoloured 3' x 6' Gabbeh containing rows of women clasping hands.
  • a great variegated Loribaft Gabbeh in shades of blue.
  • an unusual Sharbabak, which would be stunning in a kids room - animals, birds, cities and trees of life give this rug a ton of interest.
  • a 1930s Bakhtiar, 10' x 13', with a Garden Panel design, in excellent condition with nicely muted colours.

New Tribal Shipment Arriving Soon

I have just returned from a buying trip overseas, where my main purpose was to find tribal carpets. Although good pieces are getting more difficult to find, I was happy to unearth a few treasures.

I am particularly pleased about a semi-antique Bakhtiar carpet, approx. 10' x 13' from the 1940s. I also found some great Gabbeh carpets, a few nice Yalameh runners, an interesting light-coloured Turkoman, and a very lively Baluch, among others.

The pieces should be in the shop within 2 weeks, and we will post images of the shipment highlights on this site.

"That rug really tied the room together."

We had a customer yesterday who had the dilemma of being in possession of a beautiful old rug that someone had, unfortunately, "piddled on". It got me thinking of the Coen Brothers' film, The Big Lebowski, where the main character, Jeffrey "the dude" Lebowski, has a similar thing happen to his Persian rug which, "Really tied the room together." I love that film and I love that line. It is the perfect way to describe a Persian rug. More than just an accent, a rug anchors the space and defines the colours seen elsewhere in the room, urine stains notwithstanding.

It seems that the current fashion is for more nondescript tones, such as beige, muted greens or teal, but the problem is that often carpets created in accordance with this trend do little to enhance the space and often appear too washed out. Expression and balance is key and rather than viewing a rug as a design afterthought, it is often better to start from the ground up in choosing the decor for your room. This approach certainly allows for more freedom in terms of colour and pattern. Furniture can be sleek and well crafted in neutral tones, allowing for more freedom of expression in the art, accessories and, most importantly, the rug (preferably purchased at Salari Fine Persian Carpets).

Sometimes there are pieces of furniture upholstered in wild colours that are non-negotiable and in terms of balance, a more muted palette is required for the floor covering. For this I would recommend a Tabriz-Mahi carpet or maybe something from our Hadji Jalili collection, which are muted enough not to clash but still provide enough contrast and quality not to disappear altogether.

A rug really does tie the room together, and in the event of an unfortunate accident, we do provide a cleaning service as a solution to the problem of "A rug being micturated upon in this fair city."

At the DV Expo

Booth at DV ExpoBooth at DV ExpoWe are about to start the 3rd and final day at the DV Expo. It has been great to speak to all of the attendees, and to share our passion for top-quality carpets.

The carpets on the wall at the show were from the Hadji Jalili collection (large 12' x 15' on the back wall), a nice red Loribaft Gabbeh from the Loribaft collection, a Pirouzian Tabriz from our Masterweaver collection, and a beautiful wool and silk Doroksh (above the desk), from our February 2007 shipment.

New shipment of Hadji Jalili Revivals.

Hadji Jalili Revivals are antique recreations of original Hadji Jalili Tabriz carpets which are sought after by dealers and collectors the world over, often fetching a price into the hundreds of thousand of dollars. HJR has revived the Hadji Jalili Tabrizes of yesteryear, knotting carpets as close to the originals as artistically possible. Accuracy in the weave, the use of earthy and muted signature colours, as well as the precision of scale and design have all attributed to the success of this production.

Only the finest blend of Persian wool is used in the weaving of these carpets and great care has been taken to capture the essence of the originals. The hand twisting of the yarn and choice of wool guarantee the workmanship is as authentically close as possible.

These rugs are a beautiful enhancement to any residential setting and are exceptional when displayed in commercial and hospitality settings. We have just received several pieces in larger sizes, including an oversize 12' x 18' and a seldom found 12' x 12'. We are also able to accomodate other requests in size, colour and design. I will follow up with more information and a complete image gallery.

Baluchi wide runner

Baluch Runner, detail, 4'3" x 9'6"Baluch Runner, detail, 4'3" x 9'6"This unusual Baluchi runner has a subtly marbled charcoal background that is picked out by colourfully detailed vases and abstract figure motifs which are rendered in alternating columns. My guess is that it would be a wedding carpet, with the vases and combed figures representing the male and female. I could be wrong though - either way I love the whimsical details; as little men in little hats are drawn along with weft combs and stars along the outer edges with typical Baluchi spontaneity. The charcoal ground colour is actually quite unusual in Persian rugs and it is well-served by ivory lines and rich red and orange detailing. The wool foundation gives it a soft and pliable structure which adds to the tribal nature of the piece. I am a big fan of Baluchi rugs in general they are decorative and have so much life to them.
