Baluch Runner, detail, 4'3" x 9'6"This unusual Baluchi runner has a subtly marbled charcoal background that is picked out by colourfully detailed vases and abstract figure motifs which are rendered in alternating columns. My guess is that it would be a wedding carpet, with the vases and combed figures representing the male and female. I could be wrong though - either way I love the whimsical details; as little men in little hats are drawn along with weft combs and stars along the outer edges with typical Baluchi spontaneity. The charcoal ground colour is actually quite unusual in Persian rugs and it is well-served by ivory lines and rich red and orange detailing. The wool foundation gives it a soft and pliable structure which adds to the tribal nature of the piece. I am a big fan of Baluchi rugs in general they are decorative and have so much life to them.
